200 Years for the PGH

Just last month, the Pavilion Grand Hotel was thrilled to celebrate the 5 year anniversary of when we first opened our doors. This month, we are equally excited to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the original Pavilion Hotel, which opened in the summer of 1819. We are looking forward to also celebrating a number of other Saratoga anniversaries in and around this beautiful, historic city during the month of July. With everything going on in the city, it’s a great time to add a few days to your stay and enjoy some anniversary related activities. Ask us about specials on room rates and in our on-site Blue Peacock Bistro in celebration of 200 years.

The Original Pavilion Hotel

The original Pavilion Hotel, located on the site of the current City Hall, was opened in 1819 and was developed by Henry Walton. Walton was an early hotel and land owner who played a significant role in the development of Saratoga Springs. Unfortunately, after a fire in 1840 that destroyed the hotel, the choice was made not to rebuild. The current Pavilion Grand Hotel is just steps from the location of the original hotel and has worked hard to maintain all of the same elements of the original, including providing exceptional guest experiences and old-world hospitality.

Summer Anniversary Celebrations Around the City

150th Travers Stakes

This year sees the Saratoga Race Course celebrating the 150th annual Travers Race (also known as the Midsummer Derby). The Travers is the country’s oldest stakes race for thoroughbreds. The Travers Stakes is held on the last Saturday of August each year, and in the week leading up to the race, the city of Saratoga Springs celebrates with various events including live music, racing events, a restaurant week, and much more.

Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC)

SPAC, a summertime arts venue and outdoor amphitheater, celebrates its 53rd anniversary. The venue is home to Philadelphia Orchestra and New York City Ballet performances, as well as Live Nation shows throughout the season. It has been estimated that more than 20 million people have attended performances at SPAC since its opening. In addition to regular ballet, orchestra, and Live Nation events, look out for special events and performances taking place throughout the summer.

The Saratoga Polo Association

The Saratoga Polo Association just kicked off its 121st season at the beginning of July. The Saratoga Polo Club was established in 1898, and after the early 1900s when field improvements were completed, the club continued to attract paying members with the season running from June to September. This season features Hall of Fame Tournaments, Demo Days, and special Anniversary Tournaments. The club encourages newcomers to attend a match and learn more about the sport. Matches are held each Friday and Sunday during the season.

Roosevelt Mineral Baths

Saratoga Springs (“The Queen of Spas”) is famous for its mineral springs and is part of what has made the city so popular throughout history. The Roosevelt Mineral baths are marking their 84th year in operation this summer. The mineral water for these baths comes from Lincoln Spring, which is one of only two naturally carbonated springs in the entire country. This naturally carbonated water is said to have many different soothing properties and attracts visitors from all over who wish to soak in these healing waters. Today, there are more than 20 mineral springs in Saratoga, each with a slightly different flavor and chemical makeup.
